May I infect you? I want to make you contagious ...

Written by Fr. Mark O'Hern, pastor

...Not with some derivative of COVID or other communicable disease, but with the intimate love of Christ. The Gospel has always intended to be viral: Jesus' metaphor of the Kingdom of God is that of leaven (yeast) that spreads through an entire batch of dough. Jesus' evangelization protocol of dispersing disciples to plant seeds of faith, set a few spiritual fires, and then bug out for new territory, is an intentional 'super-spreader' tactic. This is the whole point of the Church and the basis of my vocation.

Over the centuries the Church's hypocrisy, scandal and self-preservation has played a role in the growing infertility of our tradition's faith. If the virility of Christ's love is to remain potent, there necessarily must be variants that bypass the ever growing immunity of society to the self-sacrificing message of the Gospel. The good news however, is that such 'adaptation' is totally in the Holy Spirit's wheelhouse.

One promising variant of the Word of God is 'The Chosen' series of videos. As a variant, 'The Chosen' is a new delivery system for the core Gospel that can bypass our defenses of cynicism and social bias we have developed against religiosity and disingenuous portrayals of the gospel. I think that 'The Chosen' can deliver an experience of Jesus' love directly to our heart through the medium of cinematography and storytelling that conveys the spirit of scripture. Here's a link to a playlist of some of my own thoughts regarding 'The Chosen', and here's a playlist of reactions of other local folks who have been thus infected by 'The Chosen'; they are courageous enough to share their experiences on the internet and hope to be contagious in a good way. The first season of 'The Chosen' can be found on YouTube, and also watch for announcements for other upcoming opportunities.

Our ultimate goal is to be contagious with the love of God to the extent that all creation becomes the conscious Body of Christ; so however you get infected- don't keep it to yourself.
